Designing Your Outdoor Living
Determine the functionality of the space. Are you wanting a recreational area, a cozy retreat, or an entertaining atmosphere?
Determine public (sidewalks, driveways), private (patio, deck), and service (equipment, anything you want to shield) areas of your backyard space, and what will be removed
Complete a site analysis determining what will be salvageable, such as existing trees, landscaping, or fencing.
Determine if the yard has drainage issues, will need grading, new soil, or retaining walls.
Define current traffic patterns and discuss what is working and not working. Determine a new traffic flow plan if necessary.
Determine what month and/or seasons you most wish to use the space. What time of day will you be using the space
Determine any potential views, space constraints, weather, or sun conditions that might hinder or enhance the design.
Determine the features, such as plants, hardscapes (walls, patios, terraces, decks, etc.), water features, furnishings, equipment, and lighting, that you wish to incorporate.
Determine the materials, colors, and style of the overall space.
Building Your Outdoor Living
Once the approval and permits have been received and design selections have been made, the designer/supervisor will plan a schedule layout with the client.
The designer/supervisor will meet with the client to review layout of deck and any other structures. Upon client approval, construction will commence.
The first step is to outline where decking is poured. Base is brought in to allow for extra support under decks, as well as bagging for the support of turndown beams, which are precisely placed for yards with topography challenges. Sleeves are brought in for future irrigation.
After client approves layout, decking is scheduled.
First, posts will be set. Then beams and joists are set. The rafters are finished with stain and a waterproofing membrane is then installed on the top of the arbor.
First, the frame shape is chalked. Then, the cinderblock structure is put in place to outline appliances and perimeter of the beautiful kitchen design (chimney, water features, fire pits, etc.). Rock veneer is installed around the kitchen frame, and to add the last touch, the bar top is set in place. Finally, we install equipment and appliances.
An installation of all underground sleeves for future gas and electrical runs are added.
Upon completion of the form work and decking, the rock work begins.
One of our team members will walk the customer through training on all appliances, equipment, maintenance, or special features.
Outdoor Living Case Study
Location: Cedar Park, Texas
School District: Leander ISD
Client Wish list: State-of-the-art outdoor amenities for parties, family fun and relaxation. Wanted a turn-key solution for a covered outdoor kitchen area, fire pit, landscaping, swimming pool and spa to be built in tandem with home construction.
Solution: A large cedar pergola structure was built to shade the over-sized outdoor kitchen, complete with an awesome appliances package and bar seating. A gorgeous fire pit and flagstone seating area warms up the space and allows for the perfect backdrop for the pool, spa and natural rock waterfall.
The design’s natural flow and functionality allowed for multiple seating and entertaining areas. In the end, the home and backyard project suited the client’s needs to have them completed at the same time.
